Father’s Day crafts are always fun to make, especially when they turn into keepsakes afterward. This donut coloring craft is simple, colorful, and easy to personalize with a photo in the center.

I also love adding painted sprinkles with Q-tips because it gives the donut such a cute finishing touch. It’s an easy activity that doesn’t need many supplies, and the finished craft looks adorable displayed for Father’s Day.

I like printing this craft on cardstock because it holds up a little better when paint is added. Regular printer paper works perfectly fine too, especially if you’re mostly using crayons or markers.

How to make this Father’s Day Donut Craft

Step 1: Print the donut template

Start by printing the donut craft template onto white paper or cardstock. If you plan to use paint, cardstock helps prevent the paper from getting too wrinkled.

Before starting, gather all your coloring supplies and set up a space where everything is easy to reach. I always like putting down a sheet of scrap paper or a craft mat first, especially when paint is involved.

This craft works well for toddlers and preschoolers with a little help, while kindergarten and older ages can usually complete most of the steps independently.

Step 2: Cut out the donut

Carefully cut around the outside edge of the donut template.

Toddlers and preschoolers may need help with this part, while kindergarten and older ages can practice their scissor skills by following the bold outline.

If cutting feels tricky at first, you can always color and decorate the donut before cutting it out. Sometimes it’s easier to handle the full sheet of paper while coloring, especially for younger ages.

Step 3: Color the donut

Color the frosting, donut edges, and lettering however you like. Traditional pink frosting looks super cute, but bright colors work just as well. You can also use favorite colors to make it feel more personalized.

Markers make the colors really bold, while crayons give the donut a softer look. Colored pencils are great if you want more detail around the frosting lines and lettering.

I used light pink for the frosting and brown around the donut edge to make it look like a classic frosted donut. The smiling face is already included on the printable, which makes it come together quickly.

Step 4: Add painted sprinkles with Q-tips

This is the fun part. Pour a few paint colors onto a paper plate or paint palette. Dip the end of a Q-tip into the paint, then gently press it onto the donut frosting to create sprinkle dots.

You can alternate colors to make the donut look extra bright and colorful. Small dots work best because they really look like candy sprinkles once the paint dries.

If the Q-tip starts getting too saturated with paint, switch to a clean one. I usually keep several nearby because it makes changing colors much easier.

This step adds such a cute texture to the craft. It also works really well for toddlers and kindergarten ages because the Q-tip painting is simple to hold and easy to control.

Step 5: Add the photo

There are two easy ways to add the photo to this Father’s Day donut craft.

The first option is to cut a small 2″ circle photo and glue it right on top of the donut hole area. This is the easiest method and works great for toddlers and preschool ages.

The second option is to carefully cut out the donut hole opening, then tape or glue a photo behind the donut so it shows through the center. This gives the craft a fun picture frame look and turns it into a cute keepsake.

You can use a school photo, candid snapshot, or even a photo booth style picture if you have one printed out already.

Step 6: Display or gift the finished craft

Once finished, the donut craft is ready to gift. It looks cute taped inside a Father’s Day card or displayed on the fridge.

You could also punch a hole at the top and turn it into a hanging decoration. Another fun idea is laminating the finished donut so it lasts longer as a keepsake.

Fun variations to try

There are lots of easy ways to customize this Father’s Day craft.

  • Use glitter glue for sparkly sprinkles
  • Add pom poms instead of painted dots
  • Make rainbow frosting
  • Use watercolor paints for a softer look
  • Write a short message on the back
  • Add fingerprints as sprinkles using washable ink

The Q-tip painting version is probably my favorite because it keeps the activity simple while adding a little extra creativity.

Tips for the best results

If you’re using paint, let the donut dry completely before cutting it out. This helps prevent smudging and keeps the paper from tearing.

I also recommend printing a few extra copies because it’s fun trying different color combinations. One can be done with crayons while another can be painted with Q-tip sprinkles.

A Sweet Father’s Day Keepsake

This donut coloring craft is such a simple project, but it turns into a really sweet keepsake once it’s finished. The combination of coloring, painting, and adding a photo makes it feel a little more personal without requiring a ton of supplies or prep work.
