St. Patrick’s Day “I’m Lucky Because…” Hat Craft for Kids
I love using holidays as a chance to slow down and reflect, and this St. Patrick’s Day leprechaun hat craft for kids does exactly that. It’s a sweet and simple “I’m Lucky Because…” activity that gives kids the chance to think about what makes them feel lucky, all while coloring in a festive leprechaun hat.
It’s especially great for preschool and kindergarten kids, for a quiet afternoon at home. Whether you’re working on gratitude, building fine motor skills, or just squeezing in a quick March activity for kids, this printable covers it all.

What you’ll need
How to Make this St. Patrick’s Day Craft
Step 1: Print the template
The leprechaun hat is sized to fit a single sheet of paper and easy for kids to color. I usually print a few extras just in case.
Step 2: Start a gratitude chat
Before coloring, I like to ask a simple question: “What makes you feel lucky today?” The answers always make me smile. Everything from family and pets to pizza and cartoons.
Step 3: Color the hat
Let kids decorate it however they like. Most go with traditional green, but I’ve seen rainbow stripes, glittery buckles, and even polka dots. Totally up to them.
Step 4: Fill In the prompt
In the space provided, they’ll complete the sentence: “I feel lucky because…” with something they’re grateful for.
For younger preschoolers, you can ask them to share their answer out loud and write it down for them.
If you’re working with kindergarten students, many will be able to write a full sentence on their own, or at least get started with a little help. It’s a great opportunity to practice handwriting, spelling, and sentence structure, all wrapped up in a meaningful craft.
Step 5, optional: Decorate the hat with shamrocks
Time to add a little fun! The shamrocks are already part of the template, so just pull out some green crayons or markers and let the coloring begin. If you’re feeling extra crafty, you can add glitter glue, stickers, or anything else you have on hand. Totally optional, but it’s a sweet way to finish off their lucky hat and make it feel extra special.
Step 6: Display their work
These make a fun bulletin board display or fridge decoration. You can even cut the hats out if you want to add them to a themed collage or March classroom display.
A Perfect Preschool & Kindergarten Craft
This is one of my favorite St. Patrick Day crafts for kids preschool teachers and parents can both enjoy. It works well in small groups, makes a great morning table activity, and opens up natural conversations about feelings and thankfulness.
If you’re in a kindergarten classroom, this can be a quick writing extension too. Kids can share their answers aloud or write short sentences to go with their decorated hats.
